The 6th Scientific Writing for Young Astronomers (SWYA) school took place from 5–9 May 2025 in the historic town of Sintra, Portugal. Organised by Astronomy & Astrophysics and hosted at NH Sintra Centro, the event brought together 30 early-career researchers and 12 lecturers from across Europe and as far away as Chile.
Through lectures and hands-on workshops, participants explored the fundamentals of scientific writing, ethical publishing practices, data archiving, promoting research, and open access. The programme was delivered by a team of experts from A&A, CDS, ESO, and EDP Sciences.
Highlights included sessions on visual communication, navigating the peer review process, and the evolving role of AI in scientific writing. A mid-week excursion through Sintra’s stunning heritage sites offered both inspiration and an opportunity for building connections among peers.
Now in its sixth edition, SWYA remains an important part of A&As’ mission to be a journal for astronomers, by astronomers, equipping early-career researchers not only with the practical skills needed for scientific writing and publishing, but also with a deeper understanding of their role in shaping and contributing to astronomical research.
